Game ROM Information- Gold Ball Version 12

Gold Ball Version 12 is a custom aftermarket version of software that is available for original Bally MPU boards, or aftermarket replacement MPU boards that use individual ROM chips in locations U2 and U6.

Version 12 consists of 2 chips on the MPU board- U2 and U6. It includes several new features and different gameplay/scoring, as described below.

These ROM chips are available as 2532 or 2732 EPROM chips (select chip type when ordering).

You must ensure that your MPU board is set up ("jumpered") for the type of chips you are ordering and installing (2532 or 2732 EPROMS), otherwise they will not work.

You can get more info on ROMs and jumper settings here.

If you're not familiar with ROM chip types or MPU board jumper settings, we recommend enlising the help of a qualified service person to help you.

Revision Info:
Version: 12
Release Date: Mar 28, 2005

This new custom version (12) is based on the original Bally Gold Ball "Factory Service Kit" which was offered by Bally after the game's release, and included a new U2 ROM chip with some different gameplay rules and scoring. This ROM was considered "Version 2" when it was provided by Bally.

Bally's Version 2 software proved to be faulty, so was discontinued.

This new custom Version 12 ROM set has the gameplay rules and scoring originally included in the Version 2 ROM from Bally, but without the software faults.

  • Added support for 7-digit score displays for players 1 - 4 (optional).
The optional 7-digit scoring feature in this ROM version requires that the original 6-digit score displays for players 1 - 4 are removed, and replaced with 7-digit score displays. It also requires the addition of some wiring between a connector on the MPU board and each player's score display (details below). If you are not skilled/experienced with this type of work, we recommend enlisting the help of a qualified service person to do the work for you.

As 7-digit scoring is an optional feature with this ROM version, your game can still be used with the original 6-digit score displays if you prefer. No DIP switch changes are needed for going from one to the other.

Optional 7-Digit Scoring Setup & Installation Notes:
  1. Replace the original four 6-digit score displays for players 1 - 4 with 7-digit displays.
  2. Add an additional wire from connector J1 Pin 7 on MPU board to Pin 12 on the connector for every player score display. (This wire does not connect to the match/ball-in-play display).
  3. Install the Version 12 ROM chips U2 and U6 on the MPU board.
  4. After power on you will see the version number in the player 1 display.
  5. Confirm correct operation of all 7 digits on the player 1 - 4 displays by running the score display self-test routine.
